Wario (ワリオ, Wario) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U. He was first confirmed as an unlockable character by people who got the game early on September 12, 2014, and was officially revealed on October 3.

Wario currently ranks 36th on the tier list due to maintaining powerful yet versatile attacks, with many of them gaining increased range. His recovery is also good and he has a good approach option with Wario Bike. However, Wario lacks a projectile, and many of his moves also have lag.

Summary

Differences from Brawl

Despite being a high tier character in Brawl, Wario has received couple of buffs to his recovery, as increases in his power and speed, making him more able to handle multiple opponents. Some of his animations are also different. However, he also got few nerfs to balance.

Attributes

  • Dash speed is faster.
  • Crawling is slight slower, and his forward crawl animation is different.
  • Wario's animations are slightly more fluid than in Brawl, most notably in his idle pose, walking and dash animations.
  • Second jump is slightly higher, and has a different animation.
  • Many moves make Wario's limbs grow larger, increasing his range.

Ground Attacks

  • Neutral Attack has less startup and ending lag, and the second hit makes Wario's range grow slightly larger, increasing its range.
  • Forward Tilt is faster, with Wario no longer spinning his fist before throwing the punch.
  • Down Tilt is much faster, with notable less ending lag. It also has more reach, with Wario's finger growing larger as he pokes the ground.
  • Up Tilt has much higher range, with Wario's hands growing larger. It also has slightly larger hitboxes at the start that allows to hit enemies on his sides.
  • Forward Smash has a different animation, being a backhand punch similar to Mario and Luigi's old Forward Smashes in the N64 version. It has higher range and knockback than his old shoulder bash, however it no longer grants super armor frames upon release.
  • Up Smash has new animation, where he headbutts upwards, in an arc, similar to Mario, Luigi and Dr. Mario's Up Smashes. It is now a single hit attack and has much higher range, with Wario's head growing drastically. Additionally, it causes much more knockback, being able to reliably KO.
  • Down Smash has a different animation, with Wario spinning more forcefully, with his hands spread. He also faces the camera more. It has much higher range and less ending lag.
  • Dash Attack causes slightly higher knockback.

Aerial Attacks

  • Neutral Aerial has more range, with Wario's belly inflating as he spins. However, it has increased landing lag.
  • Forward Aerial has higher range, with Wario's foot growing larger. It also has less ending lag.
  • Back Aerial a slightly different animation, with Wario throwing himself back more forcefully, waving his hands backwards. It has more range, with his hitbox being in an arc as he moves backwards. It also has less ending and landing lag.
  • Up Aerial has higher range, with Wario's hands growing larger. However, it deals less damage and has increased landing lag.
  • Down Aerial has slightly higher landing lag, with Wario's burying his head on the ground.

Grabs and Throws

  • Forward and Back Throw have swapped places, matching Mario, Luigi and Dr. Mario's.
  • Down Throw has higher base knockback and knockback scaling, meaning Wario no longer can perform chain-grabs against certain characters.

Special Attacks

  • Chomp now heals Wario for 1% when he eats items, including his bike. Eating items with Chomp also makes Wario Waft charge faster, and ending lag after eating any item is reduced. However, he cannot hold opponents as long as he could in Brawl. He also faces the camera more.
  • Wario Bike is faster and causes increased knockback, specially when performing a wheelie. Also, he no longer falls from the bike when turning too fast, and can only be knocked down by received damage. The bike turns is slightly slower, though.
    • However, the bike has much lower priority, being easily destroyed by projectiles while it could sustain and shrug them off in Brawl. Additionally, the wheels can no longer be picked up and thrown when the bike is destroyed, instead disappearing upon touching the ground. On the other hand, Wario can eat the wheels with Chomp before they touch the ground.
    • Additionally, if the player taunts while on the bike, Wario now picks on his nose after doing his signature "Wario" movement.
  • Corkscrew covers higher vertical range and can sweetspot the edge now. It also causes more knockback and has a slightly different animation, with Wario spreading his arms open in the last hit.
  • Wario Waft deals less damage, cover lower vertical range and no longer grants super armor frames to Wario. Additionally, Wario physically inflates in the startup, increasing his frame, as well his hurtbox, for a moment. However, Wario no longer loses his fully-charged fart if he is KO'ed before using it.
  • Wario-Man's duration is shorter, and with the changes on his Forward Smash, he no longer slides along the ground when using the attack. Also, when doing Up Aerials he no longer receives a large vertical boost, but still high enough to aid his recovery.

Trophy Description

Wario

A living embodiment of gross, this villain hates Mario and loves money. He claims to have known Mario since childhood, but who can tell if that's true? In Smash Bros., he's a seriously agile heavyweight fighter. He can store up his trademark Wario Waft for explosive results. Did I mention he's gross?

  • Game Boy - Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (11/1992)
  • GBA - WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! (05/2003)

Wario (Alt)

3DS

With his Chomp special, Wario can wolf down almost anything! Hold the button, and he'll keep his mouth open. Also, if you gobble up healing items, they'll work better! When using his Wario Bike side special, you can jump off, pick it up, and throw it. If you take one thing away from this, it's JUMP OFF. Don't ride off the stage.

Wii U

With his Chomp special, Wario can wolf down almost anything! If you use this to gobble up healing items, they'll work better! When using his Wario Bike side special, you can jump off, pick it up, and throw it. But please, for the love of all things garlicky, JUMP OFF BEFORE YOU RIDE OFF THE STAGE.

Wario + Bruiser

For most racers the finish line is the goal, but if you combine Wario with this bad boy, the game takes on a whole new meaning. And that meaning is to crash into everyone else. Behind the wheel of the Bruiser, Wario turns Mario Kart into a contact sport.

Trivia

  • Wario is the first, and so far, only character to be available as a starter in his first appearance, but unlockable in his second.
  • Unlike Brawl, Wario just has 8 costumes (like there are supposed to be) as he has 4 WarioWare colors and 4 of his plumber outfit colors, unlike Brawl where he had 12 colors instead of the regular 6 colors. This makes Wario the only character to have a decreased number of available costumes in SSBWU/3DS.
  • Chomp can eat almost any item, apart from Mr. Saturns, Poké Balls, and Cuccos. Some items make it much easier to charge the Wario Waft by adding extra charge to the move, essentially charging it faster.
