This article is about Sonic's appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. For other uses, see Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic is a returning character from the Sonic universe who appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. His return was announced during the Nintendo Direct on October 1st, 2013 to commemorate the release of Sonic Lost World.

He currently ranks 7th on the tier list (tied with Fox), a huge jump from his placement in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (where he was ranked 22nd out of 40 on the tier list). Also making him the highest ranked non-DLC 3rd party character. Sonic possesses a very fast attack speed, the fastest dash in the game, and numerous approach options in his Special Moves. However, Sonic lacks reliable KO options, and is susceptible to projectile camping.

Attributes[]

Strengths[]

  • Fastest running speed in the game.
  • Great recovery with his Up Special, Spring Jump (sometimes homing attack *proved by SonicFan1717)
    • Additionally, using this move does not leave him helpless, allowing him to attack after using it.
      • This also allows him to chase enemies above him and land easy KOs in the upper blast line.
  • Low startup and ending lag on many attacks.
  • His Up Smash has the second strongest base knockback in the game, after Lucas'.
  • Spin Dash leads into numerous combos.
  • Powerful finishers in back air, forward smash, and up air.

Weaknesses[]

  • Predictable recovery.
  • Lack of priority in many attacks.
  • Down Aerial can easily suicide if off the stage or can be easily punished if it misses due the high landing lag. However, it is possible to recover after performed off-stage using a double-jump and Spring Jump.
  • Considerable landing lag on his aerial attacks.

Changes from Brawl[]

Sonic has been buffed in terms of knockback and priority. Most of his KO moves are now more powerful. However, he has few nerfs to balance him overall.

Attributes[]

  • All of Sonic's voicelines have been redone to fit with his new voice actor, Roger Craig Smith.

Ground Attacks[]

  • Forward Tilt's final hit causes much higher knockback, to the point it can KO at high percentages.
  • Up Tilt deals less damage.
  • Down Tilt's knockback is now horizontal rather than vertical, sending the opponent forward.
  • Forward and Up Smashes causes much higher knockback.
  • Down Smash has a different animation, now being a split kick similar to Fox and Falco's Down Smash. It has much lower startup and ending lag, however it causes less damage and knockback when hitting at front, but higher knockback when hitting from behind.
  • Dash Attack now ends with Sonic slide-kicking, which causes stronger knockback.

Aerial Attacks[]

  • Neutral Aerial has a slightly larger hitbox, with a blue glow surrounding Sonic.
  • Forward Aerial deals much less damage.
  • Back Aerial deals slightly more damage.
  • Down Aerial is now a Meteor Smash. However, it causes slightly less damage.

Grabs and Throws[]

  • Forward and Back Throws cause much higher knockback, to the point it can KO at high percentages.
  • Up Throw deals much less damage.
  • Down Throw causes less damage but more knockback. Also, if used near an edge it'll send foes horizontally, similar to Wolf's Down Throw in Brawl.

Special Attacks[]

  • Homing Attack has less start-up lag, sends Sonic farther, and causes higher knockback. However, it deals less damage and can only be used once until he lands on the ground again.
  • Spring Jump covers less vertical distance. However, it stays for longer time before disappearing after hitting an enemy when used in midair.
  • Spin Dash now can be moved around when used in the air while it is charging as long as the B button is held. Also, the Spin Glitch and Parasol Glitch have been fixed.
  • Super Sonic deals less damage and knockback.

In Competitive Play[]

Sonic was initially perceived as a high-tier character, thanks to his buffs largely mitigating most of the weaknesses he had in Brawl. While his newfound KOing options would be nerfed in game updates, Sonic's player base has nevertheless managed to display many different and effective playstyles. In addition to enriching Sonic's metagame, the likes of 6WX, KEN, komorikiri, Seagull Joe, and SuperGirlKels have also resulted in him achieving very strong tournament results leading the general consensus to believe that Sonic is one of the best characters in the game.

Sonic's highly favorable perception and continued success resulted in him being ranked 6th on the first and second iterations of the tier list and then 5th on the third tier list as he continued to perform well at most tournaments with KEN placing 2nd at 2GGC: MkLeo Saga while defeating top players such as T, Raito, Elegant, Captain L, Larry Lurr, Lima, Dabuz, Nairo, and MkLeo as well as Manny, Wrath, 6WX, komorikiri, Sonido, SuperGirlKels, and Jakal continuing to perform well with him.

Although Sonic dropped to 7th on the fourth and current tier list and is now tied with Fox, his ranking is debatable. Some players, such as MKLeo ESAM, ANTi, ZeRo and Dabuz, believe that he should be ranked slightly higher. Conversely, Salem and others view Sonic as overrated to the point of not being a top-tier character in spite of his tournament success in the tournament, with a primary argument being his unfavorable matchup with Bayonetta. Regardless, Sonic remains a massive threat in competitive play and continues to gain consistent results.

Trophy Description[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

The star of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He's an easygoing hedgehog who blows past the competition with his speed. Seriously, on the ground he's faster than anyone else in Smash Bros. Use this to your advantage, avoiding blows while landing lightning-fast attacks.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (06/1991)
  • Wii U - Sonic Lost World (10/2013)

Sonic (Alt)[]

Sonic's up special Spring Jump lets him reach great heights by jumping on a spring, becoming invincible for a moment. He can't use any other specials during the jump, but he can attack or dodge. This move's great for returning from a long launch. Other fighters can use the spring, though!

Trivia[]

  • Sonic's appearance in this game is based on his more recent appearance in his games, particularly the games that used the Hedgehog Engine graphics, as opposed to his design in Brawl, which was based on his appearance in the then recently released Sonic the Hedgehog '06.
  • Sonic's voice has changed since Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He is now voiced by Roger Craig Smith, who has been his official voice actor since 2010's Sonic Free Riders and Sonic Colors rather than Jason Griffith.
    • However, his snoring sound when he's asleep, his gasping sound from when he emerges from underwater, one of his attack grunts, and his tutting from his up taunt, are all reused voice clips from his previous voice actor, Jason Griffith, in Brawl.
  • Sonic has actually officially crossed over with Mega Man before in the Archie comic series.
  • Sonic is the first third party veteran in Super Smash Bros.
  • In the 3DS version, it is possible for Sonic to run on the tracks on the Spirit Tracks stage in order to catch up to the train if he is knocked off; however, he requires a Bunny Hood in order to do so.
  • There's a reflection in Sonic's shoe, it shows an unknown location. Much like Metal Mario's trophy in Melee, which Metal Mario's trophy reflection shows Yoshi's Island, though.
  • Sonic and Pac-Man, so far, were the only third party characters to have two different stages; Green Hill Zone, Windy Hill Zone and Pac-Maze, Pac-Land.
  • Sonic and Pac-Man both have the ability to summon objects from their respective games which they would normally be unable to do: Sonic can summon a Spring; Pac-Man summons Ghosts, Fruits, and various Namco characters.
  • There is a visual glitch in the 3DS version with one of Sonic’s victory animations. When Sonic moves to take the blue Chaos Emerald and pose with his hand on his waist, his tail impales his hand.
