The Smoke Ball (ケムリ(たま), kemuri tama) is an item debuted in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When thrown, the ball emits smoke, which steadily changes color. This smoke can obscure the vision of players. If thrown at an opponent, it will attach itself to them and do a small amount of damage. When not attached to a player, the smoke ball can be picked up, if thrown upwards it will bounce high upon hitting the ground. If Luigi uses his Final Smash while holding an activated smoke ball, the smoke's color will not be affected. When holding an activated smoke ball it will continue to release smoke until you release it and it disappears. While it is most likely a Smash original item, it highly resembles the smoke ball item that Duster could use in Mother 3, as well as the item of the same name in the Pokémon series.

The Smoke Ball Trophy

An item that activates when tossed and fills the area with clouds of obscuring smoke. The smoke slowly changes color over time, from white to yellow, orange, red, purple, and finally blue before restarting the cycle. The smoke hangs around quite a while before dispersing. You can pick up an active smoke ball and hurl it again. Be careful not to lose track of yourself, though.

Snake's Foggy Mist Trick[]

If you throw a smoke ball so it activates and a player playing as Snake uses his Final Smash while holding the activated smoke ball, the smoke ball will still release smoke while it is attached to Snake, even while he is still on the helicopter. Because Snake is right in front of the screen, the smoke ball will let out smoke that can sometimes cover the entire screen. This happens whenever he uses an item that gives a visual effect, like the Starman.
