ReDeads are zombie-like undead enemies from The Legend of Zelda universe. They are common enemies appearing in the Adventure Mode stage, Underground Maze, in Super Smash Bros. Melee and in Smash Run in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. ReDeads are featured in light-brown, which appear only in the Underground Maze, and dark brown, which appear out of container items. Despite their structure, ReDeads can still bite and inflict damage on any character, size independent.

Origin[]

A ReDead attacking Link in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

ReDeads first appeared in Hyrule Castle Town in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and also reappear in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Their design in the Smash series is based on the first two games. They remain stationary or move around sluggishly, but when they see Link, they release a high-pitched scream that paralyzes him. While Link is unable to move, the ReDead will approach him to attack by latching onto his back and strangling him.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Light-brown ReDeads appear in the Underground Maze in Adventure Mode. At first, a ReDead limps, but once it identifies the fighter, the ReDead charges at them, attempting to latch on and bite them. The amount of damage dealt by a ReDead is relative to the difficulty level. ReDeads can be shaken off by mashing the controller buttons, ending their damaging process, and after which they continue to walk around. If attacked for long enough, ReDeads eventually lie down on the ground, although if they are left in this state, the ReDead eventually rises again, so only further attacks can eliminate them entirely. For every ReDead the player KO's, they will get 800 points added to their total score.

ReDeads in the Underground Maze usually appear in the main area with all the broken, floating platforms. Usually, there are about one or two ReDeads per platform. These usually fall down when attacked, or sometimes, on their own. In other areas, especially the tunnels connecting the map, they can be found in groups of three or four. ReDeads will sometimes drop a trophy when they are KO'ed.

Dark-brown ReDeads are one of three enemies that can occasionally appear from Party Balls, Crates, and other types of containers in Versus Mode, the other two enemies being Goombas and Octoroks. Aside from color, dark and light-colored ReDeads have no apparent differences between one another.

Earlier trailers of Melee showed various characters fighting ReDeads on the Temple stage.

Trophy Description[]

Seven years after Ganondorf took control of Hyrule, ReDeads roamed the ruins of castle town, moaning. Link was shocked at the state of the town, and the apparent lack of survivors. He later learned that the townsfolks had evacuated to safety, and the ReDeads were magic animated into hideous humanoid shapes.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

ReDead’s only appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is as a sticker.

ReDead in Smash Run

A ReDead, as it appears in Smash Run mode in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

ReDeads appear as enemies in Smash Run mode of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. They initially stand still, but when a character gets close enough, they release a powerful scream that stuns grounded players and pushes airborne ones. After this, they then get closer and attack with a powerful swipe; the stun of their scream can also potentially make players open to attack from the Smash Run's numerous other enemies. Graphically, ReDeads now resemble their updated look from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

Trophy Description[]

These creatures may look like zombies, but ReDeads weren't human to begin with. They appear to be clay monsters fashioned in the shape of humans. They attack Link when he gets too close, the spine-chilling sound they emit difficult to describe. Don't bother--just get rid of them!

Trivia[]

  • The trophy information in Super Smash Bros. Melee claims that Link learns in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that the ReDeads aren't undead townspeople, but evil magic in a humanoid shape. However, this is actually not touched upon in the game itself, and seems to be inferred by the fact that many of the townspeople in the past can be found in Kakariko Village later in the game, with even more appearing during a victory celebration during the game's closing scenes. Despite this, an in-game poem refers to them as "living dead" and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask has ReDeads stated to truly be undead.
