Patch Update is a feature added in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, in order to fix bugs and provide character balance. The following notes listed below documents the update history of each version of the game.

3DS Version

Version 1.0.0

The base game was released in Japan on September 12th 2014.

Version 1.0.1

This update was released for Japan on September 12th 2014, the same day the game itself was released.[1]

Version 1.0.2

This update was released for Japan on September 19th 2014.[1]

The update was later made available for the rest of the world on October 2nd, 2014, with notes that merge both the updates into one, make no mention of the bug explained in the Japanese text, and implies balancing changes that have otherwise been unnoticed by the playerbase:[2]

  • Enables online multiplayer features.
  • Adjustments have also been made to balance the game and make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Version 1.0.3

This update was released worldwide on October 27th, 2014.

  • The Conquest chart will no longer be displayed when Conquest Mode is active.
  • Various bugs have been fixed in order to provide a smoother gaming experience.

Version 1.0.4

This update was released worldwide on November 17th/18th, 2014.

  • Adjusted the game balance by refining the strengths of some fighters.
  • Various fixes to improve gameplay.

Notes:

  • Local Wireless will not work between old versions and 1.0.4.
  • Replays saved with previous game versions will no longer play after receiving this update.

Version 1.0.5

This update was released worldwide on February 9th/10th, 2015.

Official notes

  • Share mode has been added.
    • Users are able to post photos, replay data, and Mii Fighter data to the official server to share with other users around the world. Users are also able to search and download the content as well.
      • However, users can only post their own content. Content posted to the server will be deleted after 30 days.
    • Users are able to share and exchange photos, replay data, and Mii Fighter data with users on their 3DS Friend List.
      • Content is received when the Nintendo 3DS is connected to the Internet.
    • Users are able to post photos to Miiverse from within the game.
      • Photos will be posted to the official Snapshot Sharing Community.
  • amiibo functionality has been added to New Nintendo 3DS /XL. Users can tap their amiibo figure to the touchscreen to transform them into "Figure Players (FP)" to battle, train, and level-up their FP.
    • FPs that were trained in Super Smash Bros. Wii U version can be used in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
    • Nintendo 3DS/XL systems are compatible with amiibo functionality only by using a peripheral device scheduled to launch in 2015 along the software update that will follow.
  • In order to let you play the game more comfortably, we have also fixed some issues.

Other changes

  • The Games & More and Online menus have been rearranged to fit the amiibo and Share options, respectively.
    • Like most other amiibo-related changes this update, the menu option will not appear on older 3DS models, so the Games & More menu remains unchanged on these systems.
  • The default setting for Solo Smash now has a single CPU opponent instead of two.
  • For Glory stats now displays average KOs and Falls up to two decimal places instead of zero.
  • The game manual can be accessed from the main menu.
  • amiibo-related Tips have been added to the game.
    • These appear even on older 3DS models.
  • Certain custom moves, such as Link's Power Bow and Quickfire Bow, have been modified to fit and be on par with their Wii U counterparts.
  • The AI has been updated to match the Wii U version.
  • When the bridge in Gerudo Valley reforms after being broken, players are now given time to recover before the camera returns to the default position.

Wii U Version

Version 1.0.0

The base game was released in North America on November 21st, 2014.

Version 1.0.1

This update was released alongside the game's North American release on November 21st, 2014.[3]

  • Fixes to enhance gameplay stability and performance.
  • For consumers that pre-ordered from Nintendo.com or pre-purchased through Nintendo eShop, this update completes the pre-load download allowing for full game installation.

Notes:

  • Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.
  • Replay data that is saved in the game prior to the patch update will no longer be playable after the update.

Version 1.0.2

This update was released on January 29th, 2015. The following stages are now available in 8-Player Smash, with certain stage events removed to adjust for performance:

MarioSymbol Luigi's Mansion - The mansion cannot be attacked or destroyed.
StarFoxSymbol Lylat Cruise - The background stays as a constant scene in space, with no Arwings or asteroids.
MarioSymbol Mario Circuit (Brawl) - There are no Shy Guy hazards.
MetroidSymbol Norfair - No lava waves appear.
PokemonSymbol Pokemon Stadium 2 - There are no stage changes, and the screen that normally shows battle information is blank.
MetroidSymbol Pyrosphere - Ridley and associated stage hazards do not appear, and there is no lava flowing in the background.
AnimalCrossingSymbol Smashville - No background characters appear.
AnimalCrossingSymbol Town and City - No background characters appear.
WiiFitSymbol Wii Fit Studio - The background does not change to a mirror.

Additionally, the following Ω forms are now available for 8-Player Smash:

StarFoxSymbol Lylat Cruise - The stage has been made larger.
MarioSymbol Mario Circuit (Brawl) - The stage has been made larger.
MarioSymbol Mario Galaxy - The stage has been made larger, and background ships are removed.
PokemonSymbol Pokemon Stadium 2 - The stage has been made larger.
KirbySymbol The Great Cave Offensive - The stage has been made larger.
AnimalCrossingSymbol Town and City - The stage has been made larger.

In addition to these change the following minor changes have been made:

  • Saving to an amiibo from the amiibo menu no longer takes you out of the menu.
  • The text for when an amiibo is done saving has changed.
  • The name you gave to your amiibo is now displayed on the results screen if it wins.
  • Adjustments have also been made to balance the game and make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Notes:

  • This update must be applied in order to use the Internet features of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Both Versions

The Wii U version seems to have skipped versions 1.0.3 to 1.0.5 to match with the 3DS version.

Version 1.0.6

This update was released on April 15th, 2015.

  • Local Wireless will not work between old versions and 1.0.6.
  • Replays saved with previous game versions will no longer play after receiving this update.
  • "Save replay" dialog box now defaults to "OK" instead of "Cancel".
  • Added a new functionality for purchasing DLC called "DLC Shop" on the main menu.
  • A new fighter, Mewtwo, has been made available for those who were given codes. Players who do not yet have Mewtwo can still fight against it in online matches and watch replays of it on the Replay Channel. Once Mewtwo is downloaded, the following listed below will come in affect immediately:
    • The Character Selection Screen will been remapped for the inclusion of Mewtwo.
    • Mewtwo will appear in Stage 3 (Stage 5 in 3DS) of True All-Star Mode.
    • Mewtwo's silhouette will appear in the background of menus.
    • Mewtwo now appears as a random opponent in Classic, Multi-Man Smash, and Special Orders.
    • Mewtwo now appears in Smash Tour, albeit it lacks custom moves.
    • Mewtwo's avatar will become available as an online profile picture.
    • Mewtwo's sounds are added to Sound Test.
    • It's possible to obtain its Classic, Alt., and Final Smash trophies, which are unlocked as usual (its alternate trophy will being automatically granted on startup in the Wii U version).
  • It is now possible to turn off rumble for all controllers instead of having to do so with names.
  • Transferred Mii Fighters (from 3DS to Wii U) lose their headgear if that headgear hasn't been unlocked on the Wii U version.
  • When playing with friends online, a mic soundwave next to the player's tag appears whenever he/she speaks.
  • Chances for unlocking custom moves, gear, Mii outfits have been increased for all modes.
  • Announcer will say "Special Smash" for Special Smash mode.
  • 6 New stages has been added for 8-Player Smash:

Version 1.0.7

This update was released on April 24th, 2015.

  • Bugfix This update resolved the issue in which the game erroneously interprets Global Smash Power as invalid data and becomes unable to connect to the Internet after using Mewtwo in the following game modes: Classic, All-Star, Stadium, Trophy Rush, and 3DS exclusive mode Smash Run.
  • Bugfix The glitch that allowed access to Mewtwo's broken custom moves has been fixed.
  • Even though the notice states that replays saved with previous game versions will no longer play after receiving this update, they can still be played.

Version 1.0.8

This update was released on June 14th, 2015.

  • Dream Land (64), Suzaku Castle, and Miiverse (Wii U only) added as stages.
  • New downloadable content fighters Lucas, Roy, and Ryu released.
  • New downloadable content Splatoon costumes for Mii Fighters.
  • New downloadable content costumes for Mii Fighters.
  • New trophies.
  • New Music.
  • Replays of custom stages can no longer be shared. Also replays of the Miiverse stage cannot be shared.
  • Concurrent with the update to the game itself, an app named Smash Controller was released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop for $0.99 USD. The app is a standalone instance of the "Wii U" menu in the Nintendo 3DS version, allowing players without their own copy to use their Nintendo 3DS system as a controller for the Wii U version. This is the only functionality of the app; the ability to transfer custom characters is not present.

Version 1.1.0

This update was released on July 31st, 2015.

Version 1.1.1

This update was released on September 30th, 2015.

  • Super Mario Maker and Pirate Ship (Wii U only) were added as downloadable content stages.
  • Duck Hunt from the Wii U version was added to 3DS version for free as part of the update.
  • New downloadable costumes for Mii Fighters were added.
  • Any replays saved prior to the update can no longer be played.
  • Tweaked character balancing.

Version 1.1.2

This update was released on October 8th, 2015.

  • Bugfix Fixed a glitch introduced by the previous update where Diddy Kong cannot be grabbed if he shield jumps or shield grabs a multi-hit attack.
  • Any replays saved prior to the update can no longer be played.

Version 1.1.3

This update was released on December 15, 2015.

  • New downloadable content fighter Cloud released.
  • New downloadable content stage Midgar released, bundled with Cloud.
  • New Mii Fighter costumes made as DLC.
  • Tweaked character balancing.
  • Any replays saved prior to the update can no longer be played.

Version 1.1.4

This update was released on February 3, 2016.

  • New downloadable content characters Bayonetta and Corrin released.
  • New downloadable content stage Umbra Clock Tower released, bundled with Bayonetta.
  • New Mii Fighter costumes made as DLC.
  • Tweaked character balancing.
  • Any replays saved prior to the update can no longer be played.

Version 1.1.5

This update was released on March 15, 2016.

  • Tweaked character balancing.
  • Any replays saved prior to the update can no longer be played.

Version 1.1.6

This update was released on May 20, 2016.

  • Balance changes that were only for Bayonetta.
  • Any replays saved prior to the update can no longer be played.
