The Nintendo Switch is Nintendo's latest console, being a hybrid between a conventional console and a handheld gaming system, with a dock that holds a removable tablet. The Switch, called the NX during its development, was announced in a trailer from Nintendo on October 20th, 2016. On January 13th, 2017, Nintendo held a Nintendo Switch presentation in which new game titles were announced for their new console, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. The console was officially launched on March 3rd, 2017.

The console's design consists of two controllers, dubbed 'Joycons' by Nintendo, that could be easily attached and detached from the tablet and controller grip accessories for different gameplay experiences, and also possessed motion controls and HD rumble functions. A dock connects to the television, and when the tablet is placed in the dock, the game appears on the television screen and seamlessly jumps from television to tablet when the tablet is removed from the dock.

The Nintendo Switch Lite, a handheld-only version of the system, was announced on July 10, 2019; it was released on September 20, 2019. The Lite doesn’t feature detachable Joy-Cons and can only play Switch games that support handheld play.

On the Super Smash Bros. series[]

In a Nintendo Direct on March 8th, 2018, Nintendo announced that a new Super Smash Bros. title was coming to the Nintendo Switch later that year. They also confirmed that the Inklings from their new Splatoon IP, as well as Ridley from the Metroid series would be joining the roster of playable characters.
