Melee Multi-Man

Multi-Man mode is a single-player mode that was introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee as Multi-Man Melee. This mode was later returned in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (as Multi-Man Brawl) and in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U (as Multi-Man Smash). This mode challenges the player(s) to defeat as many opponents as possible, under various pretenses, before falling from the stage or self-destructing.

At the beginning of most modes, a few opponents at a very low level will spawn. As more are defeated, they will become more aggressive, and the number of opponents that can spawn at a time will increase, later spawning up to five opponents as more of them are defeated (when playing with four players in 3DS/Wii U, only four opponents will spawn at a time and the limit will never increase).

The opponents vary between all games. In Melee, there are Fighting Wire Frames to fight. In Brawl, there are Fighting Alloys to fight. In 3DS/Wii U, there are Miis to fight.

In Brawl it is possible to play Multi-Man Brawl with up to two players. This mode can also be played with a Wi-Fi Connection with a friend. In 3DS/Wii U, Multi-Man Smash cannot be played online with friends, but up to four players can play Multi-Man Smash locally.

List of Multi-Man modes

10-Man mode

In 10-Man mode, there are ten opponents that need to be defeated. This is the shortest of all Multi-Man modes, usually taking between 10 to 20 seconds to complete on average.

In Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, the last opponent is always a clone of the player (Player 1 in Co-op mode), but in 3DS/Wii U the opponent is always giant (but also has a very low handicap).

100-Man mode

In 100-Man mode, there are one hundred opponents that need to be defeated. This mode can take a few minutes for players to clear, and can get quite difficult as more opponents are defeated.

In Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, for about every 25 opponents defeated, an opponent who isn't an alloy or Mii, but rather a normal character, will spawn. In 3DS/Wii U, the 50th will be giant. The last opponent is that of 10-Man mode.

Clearing this mode for the first time in Melee and Brawl will challenge the player to defeat Falco Lombardi, and doing so in 3DS/Wii U will challenge the player to defeat Wario, where victory will result in unlocking the character in their respective games.

There are four challenges that relate to 100-Man mode:

  • Clearing 100-Man Melee in under 4 minutes gives you the Male Wire Frame trophy.
  • Clearing 100-Man Brawl in under 3 minutes and 30 seconds gives you the Ryuta Ippongi sticker.
  • Clearing 100-Man Brawl in under 4 minutes gives you the Multi-Man Melee 1 (Melee) CD.
  • Clearing 100-Man Brawl with all characters grants you the Blue Alloy trophy.
  • Clearing 100-Man Brawl with any character gives you the Pitfall trophy.

3-Minute mode

In 3-Minute mode, the player(s) is/are challenged to defeat as many opponents as possible within 3 minutes.

In Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, like in 100-Man mode, for about every 25 of the opponents defeated, a normal character will spawn. In 3DS/Wii U, every 50th opponent will be giant.

15-Minute mode

In 15-Minute mode, the player(s) is/are challenged to defeat as many opponents as possible within 15 minutes. The same rules apply to 3-Minute mode, but with fifteen minutes. This is arguably one of the more difficult Multi-Man modes, though simple strategies such as spamming a certain move or evading the opponents altogether will suffice.

This mode was removed in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U.

Both Melee and Brawl have a challenge that relate to this mode:

Rival mode

In Rival mode, the player has to defeat more opponents than their rival, a clone of the player's character. The score is determined by reducing the player's score by the number of opponents defeated by their rival (if the rival scores more than the player, the score will be 0). Only up to four opponents who isn't the player's rival will spawn at a time. Those opponents will target both the player and the rival if possible. The player can also defeat their rival, which earns them 3 points, but the rival will always respawn if defeated. If the player is defeated, whether it be from their rival or not, the game will end.

This mode is exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U and is not available when playing with more than one player.

Endless mode

In Endless mode, the player(s) is/are challenged to defeat as many opponents as possible before being knocked out themselves. This mode has no time limit, nor does it have a knock-out limit.

Brawl has two challenges regarding Endless mode:

  • Defeating 50 enemies in Endless Brawl will unlock the Mach Rider (Melee) CD
  • Defeating 100 enemies in Endless Brawl will unlock the Yellow Alloy Trophy.

Cruel mode

Cruel mode is like Endless mode, but is a lot more difficult. The opponents have much higher handicaps and increased aggressiveness. The player(s) also has/have a much lower handicap than normal. It is unarguably the most challenging Multi-Man mode, as the opponents faced are immensely harder than those who appear in the other modes.

Melee, Brawl, and 3DS/Wii U all have challenges related to Cruel mode:

  • Defeating five opponents in Cruel Melee will result in unlocking the Mr. Resetti trophy.
  • Defeating five opponents in Cruel Brawl will result in unlocking a trophy depicting the Red Alloy.
  • Defeating ten opponents in Cruel Brawl will result in unlocking a sticker depicting Liquid Snake.

Trivia

  • In all the Multi-Man modes, there are more than 4 characters playing at a time. This was unobtainable legitimately until Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
  • In Multi-Man Brawl, each Alloy uses the same moveset as other Brawl characters. Red is Captain Falcon. Green is Kirby. Blue Alloys are Zelda. Yellow is Mario.
