Miiverse Updates

Starting in June 2013, Masahiro Sakurai has released an image from the games Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U every weekday on the Miiverse website. These images often come with summaries revealing details about the games, ranging from the revealing of new characters to simply humorous images.

November 2014

November 27. Sakurai shows the medium sized board for smash tour and explains how the checkpoints work. He also said that if you get a 5, you can go through the middle and that various trophies such as Ashley will help you in situations like these.

November 26. The set-up of the Gamer stage will change at random. Watch out for Mom, who appears from an easel!

November 26. Mom also appears from the TV, and sometimes even gets out and walks around. The guy in the far window is Grandpa, who acts as a decoy.

November 25. The Orbital Gate Assault stage seen before looks like a space station. There was a Pic of the Day where fighters went through the center gate.

November 25. The Orbital Gate model is actually a trophy, as shown here. The stage itself took a whole year to make.

November 24. The tracks with a red icon are song arrangements made for this game, and the ones with the black icons are arrangements from past versions. What might be a little confusing is that some track names from Super Smash Bros. Melee are now stage names for this version. The track Corneria from Melee isn't a song that plays in Corneria in the original game.

November 24. 4 versions of the Mute City music tracks are included in this game.

November 24. In Sounds, you can listen to the voices of some enemies. Metal Face has many voice variations, and he'll say different things when Shulk is on the field.

November 21. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is now available in America!

November 20. You'll need to link the 3DS version and the Wii U version to get them to work together, but it's easy. On the 3DS version, choose the Wii U option, and on the Wii U version, choose the 3DS option.

November 20. This is what the 3DS screen looks like when connecting. The 3DS can be used to make up for a lack of controllers.

November 19. There are masterpieces in the Wii U version. You can see what fighters have previously done by playing their original games.

November 19. Some of the Masterpieces aren't unlocked until later in the game.

November 18. In the Wii U version, all the Stadium Mode games can be played Co-op, like in Home-Run contest, where you take turns launching Sandbag.

November 18. The batting order is decided randomly to be fair to the player going first. Target Blast and Home Run Contest are oft-played games, but players may come up with unique ways to play it

November 17. "Intensify your activity by dodging a rampaging car"

November 14. Sakurai comments on the difficulty of describing Smash Tour in just a few sentences. In the end, he says that if you play it three times with friends, Smash will feel much more like a party.

November 14. There are three types of game boards. If you turn on the Custom Fighters option, the fighters will be preset with custom special moves. The number on a fighter's portrait on the game board indicates which custom move set that fighter is using--this also adds to the randomness of this mode.

November 13. Every character reveal trailer is contained in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and every video is of the highest quality.

November 13. Every character's Classic Mode completion videos are also stored, and though they are short they have a message if all of them are watched.

November 12. The new Mario Circuit stage is based on Mario Kart 8, so the stage flips over occasionally.

November 12. When the background is upside down, the driving Shy Guys will also jump upside down. However, the players' gravity will always remain the same.

November 11. Temple, the epitome of large stages, returns to the Wii U version in HD.

November 11. One large change that's been made is the Hylian text on the platforms. What does it say...

November 10. Playing Classic Mode with two players mean you can face both Master-type opponents, but they will be powered up. The picture here is of Master Beast.

November 10. Exclusive to the Wii U version is the Master Fortress, and it must be defeated by attacking its heartlike cores.

November 7. The Wuhu Island stage is revealed. It is similar to Pilot Wings, but this time you can tour famous island locales.

November 7. Here we are at the starting line of a power-cruising race. You will also go to a mountain summit, in front of a fountain, on a suspension bridge, in a fighting arena, or riding on a boat. The stage really feels like a resort vacation.

November 7. Sakurai comments about how this stage always makes him dream about going to tropical islands.

November 6. The Yoshi's Woolly World stage is revealed. It was added near the end of development, and the surfaces are quite soft and cushiony.

November 6. The mobiles will be arranged differently depending on the situation and will tilt with weight distribution. The stage will get rearranged, so the ground will disappear occasionally.

November 5. Jackpot Opportunity is a new single-player event where you have to collect 1,000 Gold to pay off your loan. It works the same as a coin battle.

November 5. In the event It's Past Your Bedtime, you must put every fighter to sleep at once as Jigglypuff.

November 4. The Fiend's Scale for the Wii U version of Classic Mode is shown. While the 3DS version looked like a storybook, here you will appear to drop deeper into the underworld the higher you make the intensity. The very bottom looks ferocious.

November 4. The field in Classic Mode has five different backgrounds based on the intensity level. It looks peaceful on low intensity, but intimidating on high intensity.

November 3. The menu for the Wii U version is shown, with silhouettes of fighters in the background. Sakurai comments that it looks "sparkly."

October 2014

October 31. The new Stage Builder for the Wii U version is shown, which allows you to draw lines to create an endless variety of stages, even ones that are hard to battle on, such as this one.

October 30. Some Photo Editor pictures. "Your finger stinks!"

October 30. "It is bitter, yet tasty."

October 29. Classic Mode for the Wii U version is arranged like a colosseum, where you move your character's trophy to a grouping of character trophies which you will fight against. The stage is indicated by the picture beneath the trophies. This leverages the 8-player multiplayer.

October 28. The Special Smash mode for the Wii U version is shown. Here we have a Stamina-based, Mega-sized with the Bunny Hood, Back Shield with Reflect, Lightweight, Slow, Angled Smash.

October 27. All but one of Shulk's color variations are based off the outfit colors of his companions. Lucina's color variations are based off the female characters from Fire Emblem: Awakening.

October 24. For the first time, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U can support up to 8-player multiplayer!

October 24. For such a large number of fighters, stages like Battlefield have been made much bigger so battling can be easier.

October 23. The Giant Screen in the Wii U Boxing Ring stage reenacts the multi-screen effect seen in the arcade version of Punch-Out!! Characters' aliases will also be displayed on the screen.

October 22. Sakurai shows the "behind-the-scenes" for a secret character's moveset, involving an NES Zapper. The image is edited, but it will be used for this secret character's reveal video.

October 21. The trophies from the Xenoblade series are revealed to be mostly in the Wii U version. Here's Melia looking the other way.

October 20. Sakurai shows off the Rules screen for the Wii U version, and reveals the comical pictures that go with each option.

October 17. Sakurai reveals the Photo Studio for the Wii U version, where you can create dream collaborations and funny situations with photos of your trophies, such as Zael grabbing Superspicy Curry from Master Hand.

October 16. The Tips will be displayed in three columns at once in the Wii U version, and Sakurai comments that the game never seems to run out of Easter Eggs.

October 15. Two unknown modes in the Games and More section of the Wii U version are shown, featuring Master Hand and Crazy Hand, but Sakurai declines to say what they are. He says "Pic of the day. Now, what mode is this…?!"

October 14. The Trophy Hoard for the 3DS version is shown, and Sakurai challenges everyone to find Stalfos.

October 13. Bass is shown as a trophy and Sakurai expresses how impressed he is with the design team's work on Bass, even though he is just a trophy.

October 13. Zero's trophy is also shown, and Roll and Proto Man are also revealed to be trophies.

October 10. Sakurai shows off Home-Run Contest for the 3DS version, and asks players how they are faring with their distance and their Global Smash Power rakings.

October 9. The Trophy shop for the Wii U version is shown. It operates identically to the 3DS one, but it looks a lot different...

October 8. The Flying Men in the Magicant stage will ally with the first fighter who touches them, and will attack the other fighters with cross-chop attacks. Up to 5 Flying Men can appear at once, and they can take damage and die, after which a grave will be erected for it.

October 7. To use an Amiibo in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, just put it on the lower left corner of the Game Pad, or alternatively, place it on the character selection screen to make it a part of the match!

October 7. The real-life trophy is seen "coming to life" in the game. It will turn into a Figure Player, which fights and develops on its own.

October 6. Conquest Mode is now open overseas, making things get much more serious. Updates will happen more frequently, and Global Smash Power rankings will also get more interesting.

October 3. Sakurai commemorates Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS being released overseas, and promises to now update about hidden elements, though it will be more of a trickle.

October 2. The Assist Trophy Sheriff is shown. Sakurai comments that he could have been the basis for all modern shooting games.

October 1. The Orbital Gate stage is unveiled for the Wii U version, reenacting Team Star Fox's defense of the Orbital Gate. Players start off fighting on the Great Fox.

October 1. Missiles will be fired at the orbital gate, but they will eventually be blocked or shot down, making things quite hectic.

October 1. The fighters later transition to the Arwings as they pass through the gate.

September 2014

September 30. As with the 3DS version, characters in the Wii U version will have outlines that show what team they are on. The outline looks faint up close, but when the camera zooms out on your character the color will appear more clearly.

September 29. By holding the R Button while selecting a stage on the 3DS version, its alternate track will play. The alternate track for Living Room is a vocalised version of the normal track.

September 29. You can choose whether to play on the Smash Bros. version of Boxing Ring or the Punch-Out!! version by holding down the L or the Y button respectively. Otherwise, the version will be random.

September 26. Sakurai reveals a new stage for the Wii U version, Gamer. Don't let Mom catch you!

September 26. If Mom does catch you, she'll blast you with scolding, making things very chaotic.

September 25. Sakurai shows off more of the Miis' headgear, and wonders how the players will dress up their Miis.

September 24. Pac-Man drawings make an appearance on the PictoChat 2 stage, taken from the 2005 game Pac-Pix.

September 24. Another mode of PictoChat 2 makes it look like the stage has depth, when really it is just testing your perspective.

September 23. When the Master Hand's glove rips open, a swarm-like substance will come flying out, and how much comes out will determine the shape of the final enemy. Your goal is to knock as much of it away as possible, and the higher the intensity, the denser the substance will be.

September 22. The results of Conquest Mode are shown, and the players' next challenges are to fight with characters they've trained up and then metal characters.

September 19. The Castle Siege stage returns to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

September 19. Like Coliseum, Castle Siege isn't based on any particular Fire Emblem game.

September 18. The Fighter Records window has been improved, making it easier to view your records.

September 17. A new game, StreetSmash, is show. Sakurai suggests setting it up when you get the game.

September 16. The haunting duo, Yellow Ghost and Gastly, are shown, with two very different abilities. You can only defeat Gastly using items, but the Yellow Ghost will reflect all attacks. Make sure to use your grab.

September 15. The Conquest mode is shown, which aggregates specific wins from a number of teams until it determines the victor. Conquest is currently running in Beta, and Sakurai states that the data players who repeatedly lose on purpose will be deleted.

September 12. In Spectator Mode, you can see the statuses of players all over the world. In Group play and Spectator Mode, you can see characters that you haven't unlocked yet, so approach with caution.

September 12. Even if you don't want to be spoiled, it might be wise to select the Online option at least once before you start the game. Your Global Smash Power won't appear until the first time you connect to the internet. There could also potentially be a patch available that can resolve potential issues, like the one being released for the Japanese version of the game. For the package version, updates can be pre-downloaded to your system even before you purchase the game.

September 11. Alph appears in Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U as Olimar's palette swap.

September 11. Even though Alph's only a palette swap, his name is used when he is played.

September 10. Players in Japan can now play a demo version of Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, and can choose from five playable characters. The only stage they can play on is Battlefield, and some items and Assist Trophies will also be available.

September 10. While Smash is the only mode players can play in the demo version, they can also go to the Tips mode to learn more about the game.

September 9. In Classic Mode, a roller spins before every match to determine your reward. Red rewards are for customizations, green ones are for trophies, and yellow ones are for gold. The abundance of rewards will increase the higher the intensity is. It is possible to be rewarded for every match.

September 9. The Results Screen is shown, which shows what you gained on each stage. If you mess up in the middle, you can lose some of your rewards, though.

September 8. This is what the view looks like within the Vault. The trophies collection will start off with one randomly selected trophy. In your Album, you can view pictures you've taken of fighters posing. Photos taken with the 3D Depth Slider on will take photos in stereoscopic 3D, and photos will be in 2D when they're taken with that feature turned off.

September 5. The "Games & More" section is shown for the 3DS.

September 5. When you go to Games & More, you can go to a Group mode, a Solo mode, the Custom mode, and the Options mode.

September 5. The Solo mode is shown, where you can play Classic mode, Home Run Contest, Multi-Man Smash, and more!.

September 4. The final part of Smash Run, "Run!" is shown, where the characters race to the finish line. Naturally fast characters and characters with lots of speed boosts have the advantage, but it's more than just running...

September 4. The red spikes called "Danger Zones" are shown, which will send anyone who touches them farther back. The Danger Zones disappear after the first player to touch them touches them, giving those behind an advantage. Speed boosts are also present during this mode.

September 4. Another final mode of Smash Run, "Climb!", is shown, where this time characters that can jump or fly higher have the advantage. The Danger Zones are also there, and having too many speed boosts can be rather dangerous...

September 3. Each character now has 8 colors to choose from instead of around 4. Samus is shown in her Varia Suit, Fusion Suit, Gravity Suit from Super Metroid, and Dark Suit color schemes.

September 3. Samus' other color schemes: Gravity Suit from Metroid Prime, Green Samus, the Light Suit, and Dark Samus.

September 3. Villager has four costumes for each gender. These are the four costumes not shown yet.

September 2. All-Star Mode returns to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U, and one can start it as soon as they begin playing. For the first time, players do not have to unlock every character to play this mode, but it will be incomplete until they do, and they can only play against characters they've unlocked.

September 1. Riki appears both as an Assist Trophy and in Shulk's Final Smash. He uses a lot of attacks like Tingle, but Tingle will also be in the game too. Also, a cursor will appear over Assist Trophies and Pokémon to indicate which fighter they belong to.

August 2014

August 29. Shulk is confirmed to be a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, and the Gaur Plain stage is also confirmed.

August 29. Shulk's sword, the Monado, can activate a beam, making it useful for long range. It can also activate the Monado Arts, changing Shulk's stats in battle.

August 29. Shulk's Monado Arts include 翔 (Jump): Higher jumps, lower defense; 疾 (Speed): Faster movement, weaker attacks; 盾(Shield): Higher defense, slower movement; 斬(Buster): Stronger attacks, weaker launch ability; 撃(Smash): Stronger launch ability, weaker attacks, lower defense against launching.

August 29. The Fighting Mii Teams are shown, replacing the Fighting Alloys. Their appearance is taken from Miis on the player's console, providing an infinite number of appearances.

August 28. The Custom section is shown, where players can customize their characters' movesets. Sakurai says to make sure to do this before putting that character into Smash Run.

August 27. A panel in the Challenges area will unlock everytime you clear a challenge. When you unlock a panel, you'll see hints for unlocking panels directly adjacent to it on all sides. And this time, each panel will unlock pictures related to the challenge. The challenges in the 3DS version are a little on the easy side, but the Wii U version challenges might be a bit trickier.

August 26. Spectator Mode returns to even the 3DS, where people can watch others fight from around the world, check their stats, and bet in-game gold on them.

August 26. 1st and 2nd place will get prizes in four-player matches, and spectators can bet the gold they win on Bonus Chances.

August 25. The new version of Classic Mode is shown, in which you challenge multiple stages en route to a climactic final battle. The difficulty of the levels is determined by the amount of gold you put on the Fiend's Scale, which in turn will yield better rewards. The way to get more gold is to play on harder difficulty.

August 25. In this version of Classic Mode, you can choose where on the map you want to head next. Sakurai confirms that Master Hand is waiting at the end, but says something might change if one raises the intensity...

August 22. Sakurai reveals how remixes and songs work in the 3DS version of the game.

August 22. Sakurai also mentioned how you can play music in "Sleep Mode", using it as a portable mp3 player. Additional information includes having songs play in Smash Run that the player selects, as well as posting songs on the official Smash Bros. website.

August 21. The Demon Lord Ghirahim from the Legend of Zelda series appears as an Assist Trophy.

August 20. Sakurai states the importance of treasure chests in Smash Run, as they hold a variety of stat boosts, as well as custom parts (bag on the the right) and Smash Run powers (bag on the left).

August 20. However, some treasure chests are actually Mimicuties in disguise, and Sakurai warns to run away from them.

August 19. Two of Zero Suit Samus' new alternate costumes are shown, shorts from the ending of Metroid: Zero Mission.

August 19. Her alternate costumes shown on the 3DS version. Sakurai confirms that the Wii U and 3DS versions have the same costume selection.

August 18. The Nightmare Wizard appears as an Assist Trophy. He will engulf the stage in darkness, disorienting even the computer players.

August 15. The place where players equip the powerups they got in Smash Run is shown. Sakurai says to get a good mix of them, and you can also change their order by dragging them across the screen.

August 14. Mega Man's custom Special Moves include Beat and Plant Barrier. Sakurai hints that he might also have moves used by his bosses.

August 13. Meta Knight returns to battle in Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, as well as the Halberd stage.

August 13. Meta Knight's Up Special Move Shuttle Loop has been changed, as it does not have glide, but it slashes opponents twice while spinning in a large loop.

August 12. The Special Flag item is shown, which if grabbed and raised will give the player an additional KO count in a Time Match or an additional stock in a Stock Match.

August 11. Helmets for the Mii Fighter based on Samus Aran and Meta Knight are shown.

August 8. A new 3DS stage based on the Game Boy is unveiled, with Sakurai commenting that if you turn on the 3D effect, it looks like there is an actual Game Boy inside the screen.

August 7. The trophy gallery for the 3DS version is shown, and it is rumored to contain more trophies than Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Players can rotate the trophies by drawing circles on the bottom screen.

August 7. Players can also buy trophies using coins they've collected, and the prices of trophies are subject to change.

August 6. Victini and Xerneas are revealed to be support Pokemon. Victini boosts its summoner's attacks as well as preventing flinching, while Xerneas increases the launch power of all fighters, though its summoner's power is exponentially increased.

August 5. The Daybreak item is unveiled, which is a combinable item like the Dragoon.

August 4. The Prince of the Sable Kingdom, from the Game Boy game For the Frog the Bell Tolls, appears in Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U as an assist trophy.

August 1. A new mode, Target Blast, has been revealed.

August 1. Target Blast combines elements from Target Smash!! and Home-Run Contest.

July 2014

July 31. N's Castle has been confirmed as a stage in the 3DS version, with appearances from Pokémon such as Reshiram, Milotic, and Zekrom.

July 30. Boss Galaga appears as an item, beaming up players towards the upper blast line.

July 29. For the first time in the series, a Paper Mario stage has been revealed for the 3DS version. This part of the stage is based on Hither Thither Hill from Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

July 29. Eventually, the stage folds in on itself, revealing the S.S Flavion from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

July 28. Takamaru is revealed to be an Assist Trophy.

July 25. The game modes for the Nintendo 3DS version of Smash Bros. are revealed.

July 25. The bottom screen shows additional information such as how to play.

July 24. The stage Tomodachi Life has been confirmed. Miis that are saved on the system will appear in the stage.

July 23. The stages Wily Castle and Boxing Ring are confirmed to be on both versions of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, and are the only stages so far to be on both systems. There are minor differences though, such as the 3DS version of Dr. Wily's castle being during daylight hours.

July 22. The Great Fox from Star Fox: Assault is shown, with Sakurai commenting that characters may be running on top of it.

July 21. Robin's Nosferatu will damage enemies while healing him, and is more powerful when used from behind.

July 18. Mario and Little Mac get Screen KO'd. Sakurai stated that how you get KO'd will depend on where you get KO'd, and Star and Screen KOs will be disabled in the later parts of a match.

July 17. Nintencats are confirmed to appear on the Living Room stage, along with five breeds of Nintendogs.

July 16. Robin's Levin Sword can be activated when using smash attacks and in midair, but it can only be used a certain amount of times before it breaks and Robin uses his bronze sword.

July 15. Lucina joins the battle, with a moveset identical to Marth's. However, her power is concentrated through her whole sword rather than the tip.

July 14. Robin joins the battle, using tomes and his Levin sword. Players can also select Robin's gender.

July 14. The Rayman trophy is unveiled.

July 11. Pac-Man's Up Taunt, Namco Roulette, has him projecting various Namco characters from his hand.

July 10. Mario wears a costume from NES Open Tournament Golf, and Samus has a new alternate costume.

July 9. The Dark Emperor causes status effects based on costume color, such as red getting powered up. Also revealed a Mii Force Helmet for the Mii Fighter.

July 8. Palutena's Heavenly Light has a huge hitbox, but is a no-flinch attack.

July 8. Palutena's up-smash has a far reach.

July 7. The Mii Gunner's Side Smash reaches farther than any other character's.

July 4. The Pac-Maze stage for 3DS is unveiled. If you eat 100 Pac-Dots, Power Pellets will appear in your color.

July 3. Mega Man Volnutt and Mega Man.EXE appear in Mega Man's Final Smash. Despite only appearing for a split second, they look incredibly detailed.

July 2. The Mii Gunner wears a suit, and his clothes affect the look of his arm cannon. One of Rosalina's alternate costumes is also seen.

July 1. Little Mac's alternate costumes include his pink hoodie and blue-striped shorts.
