Judge is Mr. Game & Watch's Side Special Move. By using it, Mr. Game & Watch will attack with his hammer and hold up a card with a number on it. Each number has different effects.

Effects

  • 1 - An attack that does 1% and doesn't produce hitstun. In Brawl and the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game, this Judge damages Mr. Game & Watch by 12%, regardless of whether the attack connects with an opponent, and regardless of stale-move negation.
  • 2 - A weak attack that does 4% with minimal knockback without any special characteristics, aside from a 20% chance of tripping.
  • 3 - An attack that does 6% with a Fan sound upon contact. Similar to a Fan's Tilt attack, this attack launches the enemy backwards and deals significant Shield damage to opposing shields.
  • 4 - A slashing attack that does 8% and launches opponents diagonally, similar to the Beam Sword's Tilt attack.
  • 5 - An attack that produces four electrical charges that zap the opponent, making them rise. Each hit does 3%, for a total of 12%.
  • 6 - A flame attack that does 12% with surprisingly strong horizontal knockback. This attack is also a Semi-spike, making it deadly to recovering opponents. This Judge is the second strongest Judge in terms of knockback, despite there being two higher Judges before #9.
  • 7 - An attack that does 14% with moderate horizontal knockback. A food item will also appear in honor of the lucky #7. In Brawl, this item is invariably an apple. This is the same in the 3DS and Wii U versions. The apple does not appear if used against generic enemies.
  • 8 - An attack that does 9% with weak vertical knockback while freezing the opponent. Like standard ice traps, damage dealt to the opponent while they are in a frozen state only does half damage and minimal knockback. The freezing effect does not appear if used against generic enemies.
  • 9 - An extremely powerful attack that does 32% with massive horizontal knockback. If used correctly, it can OHKO opponents. It will always KO when the target(s) hit have taken at least 40% damage. It produces the "ping" sound upon contact similar to the Home-Run Bat's smash attack. Mr. Game and Watch's Alarm sound effect as heard in his up taunt will also play when a number 9 is displayed and an electricity effect will envelop him regardless of whether or not the move has connected.

Custom Variations

Extreme Judge

Extreme Judge is one of Mr. Game & Watch's Side Special Moves that can be used via customizations. When Mr. Game & Watch uses this move, he will only receive the numbers 1 and 9. Getting a 1 hurts Mr. Game & Watch by 5% rather than 12%. Getting a 9 from Extreme Judge does 28% and has a slightly weaker horizontal knockback from the original Judge.

Strengths

  • 9 is much more likely to appear
  • Only 2 numbers can make it easier to predict what number Mr. Game and Watch will get
  • 1 deals less recoil damage

Weaknesses

  • Only 2 numbers can make it easier to predict what number Mr. Game and Watch will get
  • 9 deals less damage and knockback
  • 1 is much more likely to appear

The Extreme Judge quite literally has some extreme advantages and disadvantages. Both the numbers 1 and 9 will appear more often since they are the only possible numbers to get when using the move. The 1 deals less recoil damage, but since it is more likely to show up, Mr. Game and Watch can easily rack up a lot of damage on himself if the move is spammed. On the other hand, 9 is also more likely to show up, but is weaker, dealing less damage and slightly less knockback, making it less reliable for securing KOs. Since there are only two possible numbers Mr. Game and Watch can get with this move, it is easier for the player to predict what number will appear next, however, it is also easier for the opponent to predict this, allowing them to outmaneuver and stay away from Game and Watch if they know he has a 9 on board.

Chain Judge

Chain Judge is one of Mr. Game & Watch's Side Special Moves that can be used via customizations. Mr. Game & Watch attacks with his hammer, if he hits an enemy, he will hit the number of times it says on the board with the final hit being a different amount of damage and higher knockback.

Strengths

  • Racks up good amount of damage
  • Good combo finisher
  • Good launch power
  • 1 doesn't do recoil damage.

Weaknesses

  • Special effects such as tripping, freezing, and electricity is no longer present
  • 9 has less KO power

Chain Judge is excellent for racking up a good amount of damage on an opponent, especially if a higher number is displayed. This can make it a good combo finisher though it takes luck and chance in order to get a number that will work well as the combo finisher. The special effects that the different numbers had are no longer present; 9 is also weaker in KO power. The move still has some good launch power behind it though.

Origin

Judge was a Game & Watch game that could be played with two players. Two Game & Watch characters had signboards and hammers. When a round starts, each player's sign would display a random number from 1 to 9. The point of the game was for the player with the higher number to hit his opponent on the head with their hammer, while the player with the lower number tried to dodge said attack. If the numbers were equal, the player can either hit or dodge. This was translated in the Super Smash Bros. series, in which the higher the number, the stronger the attack.

Trivia

  • Despite being known as Judgement in his Melee trophy data, it was changed for his update on the DOJO!! to match the name of the source game.
  • When playing as Mr. Game & Watch in Home-Run Contest in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, the number will always be 6.
