Dr. Mario (Dr. マリオ Dokutā Mario?) is a doctor-costumed version of Mario that was the star of his eponymous game for the NES, Game Boy, and SNES. He also stars in Dr. Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, Dr. Mario and Puzzle League for the Game Boy Advance, Dr. Mario Online Rx, which is a new game for Wii's Wii Ware and Dr. Mario Express, which is a new game for the DSi's DSiWare. He was introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee, where he is an unlockable character. However, he is not included in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and then included once again as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Character description

Dr. Mario is simply Mario garbed in a doctor's uniform, equipped with his powerful "Megavitamins" to fight against viruses (Blue, Red And Yellow Viruses). He originated in the 1990 NES/Game Boy game.

In Super Smash Bros.

In the original, Dr. Mario was briefly mentioned in Mario's biography, among his many other past professions.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Dr. Mario appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the thirteen new characters introduced. He is a secret character and considered to be a "clone" of Mario, since he is a slower, yet stronger version of Mario. While not many significant differences exist between the two characters, there are a few - the main one being that rather than shooting Fireballs as his Neutral B move, he throws Megavitamins. The subtle differences between Dr. Mario and Mario work to Dr. Mario's favor in the competitive scene, and place him slightly higher on the current tier list.

Trophies

Dr. Mario, like the rest of the playable characters, has three different trophies dedicated to him. The Viruses from the Dr. Mario game also appear as a trophy.

Immaculate in his medical garb, Dr. Mario destroys killer viruses with his amazing vitamin capsules. With his dedicated nurse, Princess Peach, at his side, Dr. Mario spends day and night in his laboratory working on new miracle cures. Somehow he's managed to keep up with all the new viruses that have arisen over the years.

There's hardly any difference in the abilities of Mario and Dr. Mario, so choosing is largely a matter of taste. Dr. Mario is a tad slower due to his lack of exercise, but his Megavitamins pack a bit more punch than Mario's Fireballs. The capsules travel on a unique trajectory and make a distinct sound on impact.
Dr. Mario [Smash]
The differences between Dr. Mario and Mario are more pronounced in some areas than others, but basically they can be played in a similar fashion. While it may be hard to spot the contrasts, they do exist. For example, Dr. Mario's Super Sheet is longer and narrower than Mario's cape, and any opponents hit by Dr. Tornado will fly off in diverse directions.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Dr. Mario was one of the five playable characters in Melee who did not return as a playable character in Brawl. Instead, his only appearance in the game is as a single sticker that can only be used to power up characters from the Mario series and Yoshi. Additionally, he is referenced with the inclusion of "Dr. Mario (Melee)" as an immediately available music track for PictoChat, and the inclusion of "Chill (Dr. Mario)" as an unlockable music track for Flat Zone 2.

Hacking

Hacking has revealed partial programmed data in Brawl for Dr. Mario. Some take this as signs of a planned character, but it is also likely, if not more so, that it was there for referential purposes by the programmers, or data imported from Super Smash Bros. Melee. He also may have been an alternate costume for Mario.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

After being absent from Brawl, Dr. Mario returned as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. He retains his moveset from Melee, but now possesses a Final Smash called Doctor Finale, which functions similarly to Mario's Mario Finale, but instead launches two giant-sized Megavitamins that deals more damage. Dr. Mario was originally planned to be an alternate costume for Mario, but was given his own character slot due to wanting to appeal to his Melee fanbase.

Trophies

Dr. Mario
In the 1990 puzzle game Dr. Mario, Mario threw on a white coat and decided to take a shot at that whole "medicine" thing. In this game, he's a balanced fighter who can throw Megavitamin capsules and nimbly deflect blows with his Super Sheet. He's not quite as quick as normal Mario, but his attacks deal a bit more damage.

Dr. Mario (Alt.)
Mario and Dr. Mario are only slightly different. Basically, Dr. Mario is stronger, but his MD slows his speed and lowers his jump. He also has a move Mario doesn't: Dr. Tornado, a down special that can trap opponents before launching them. You can move left and right while doing it and press the button repeatedly to rise into the air.
